Lighting of Water Features

water feature grotto closeHave you ever noticed how much we are all attracted to water?  It’s a natural instinct to gravitate towards this elemental form, as there is a special energy within it which we all desire.  Outside of the fact that water is a critical component to survival and life, it serves as a medium that works extremely well with light.

This article will broadly view the use of water in conjunction with outdoor lighting to better understand the various types of water features we find for this application.  To help categorize these features, we have created a listing of them of which we will briefly discuss below:

  • Water ways—streams, creeks, rivers, lakes (natural or manmade)
  • Pools & Basins—swimming & lap pools, Koi ponds, grottos, water basins (manmade or natural)
  • Fountains, structural—pre-fabricated, architectural, bowls, tiered (manmade)
  • Fountains, spray—immersed jets or sprays below water or at the surface
  • Waterfalls & Spills—(natural or manmade)

As you can see, there are five separate types of water feature types that have been listed.  Each of these has a preferred way to illuminate them, based upon how they are viewed.  An experienced lighting designer will truly understand these differences and what best applies for the design intent.

GENERAL APPLICATIONS

Because this article is an overview to the whole concept of applying light to these varying forms of water features, we wanted to give the reader additional insight into how each are lit.  There are several ways to bring a water feature to life and it all has to do with the way you position light fixtures.  In addition, you need to understand how water reacts with light.

Harshbarger tree mirror compressWater is unique in that it can reflect or refract light.  It is like glass or a mirror when light is aimed at its surface.  When the light source is within the water, it acts to refract or to bend in its projection.  Water acts like a solid shape, as it spills in the air and light is projected onto it—it will cast a shadow.  This is the magical part of both forms, as they create movement—a dancing of shadow patterns upon a backdrop or wall.

Generally speaking and for any setting which is viewed as a whole, it is best to illuminate water features from outside the water and from above.  This application allows for the lighting to be cast so that darkened or shadowed areas are less prevalent.  Also, this provides for a smooth viewing transition across the setting that is not distracting.

water feature natural spillsHowever, water features can become wonderful focal points.  Depending upon the type of feature that is being lit and the surrounding elements, it can take on a much more pronounced effect.  Backdrop structures, such as walls or fences can add to this drama.  Plants or trees can do the same thing, depending on how they are arranged.

CONCERNS

As with other applications, there are some concerns that must be addressed with this form of lighting:

  1. Electrical Protection—electricity and water don’t mix well.  It is a safety hazard and measures should be in effect when providing lights in or around water.  A licensed professional should ensure that all codes and standards are utilized for this work.
  2. Glare—this is always a concern no matter the application.  Light can cause glare problems for the viewer whether the source is inside or outside of the water.  Glare can be both hazardous and annoying.
  3. Waterproofing—this is a two-fold concern, especially if the light fixture is placed within the water feature (underwater).  The fixture, whether L.E.D. or incandescent, needs to be waterproofed, as well as any connections.
  4. Routine Maintenance—underwater lighting services is about as demanding as tree down lighting, and requires extra demands of the provider.  Ideally, conduit should be installed for all cable runs entering the water feature, as this will provide those working on the structure a means to address any potential problems with the cabling.

water feature tiered bowlsIt is important to note the value of a good lighting designer here.  If time and considerations are made on the front end of a lighting design, then this will allow for ease of service maintenance and any future additions to the system.  Experience is the key to success.

Down Lighting from Trees

The light is spilling through the trees.

It fills the lawn and warms the breeze

That plays small ripples on the lake…”

Susan Rogers

As one reads the beauty presented through poetry of the magic created from light, it develops a positive feeling and imagery.  Light completes a space and provides depth.  It is important to note that emotions are developed through this applied light.

garden path down litDown lighting from trees can add an entirely different perspective to the scene, whether it is the surrounding and underlying area or a distant view.  A good lighting designer will understand this nature, and it is in this knowledge that you gain an appreciation for their true value.  Outdoor lighting design employs the use of various lighting applications in order to achieve a particular mood or feeling.

APPLICATION

In a basic sense, down lighting equates to the use of one or several light fixtures positioned from a overhead location, such as from a tree branch or trunk.  These lights are utilized to mimic either the sun or the moon.  Primarily, they are a softer form of light broadly cast down onto the ground below.  However, they can be used as a pin-point source to highlight a particular feature from this higher angle.

Tree climb 1Typically, one can discern those with real lighting experience from those who lack it by the use of down lighting.  There are many companies that avoid the use of down lights because they are more difficult to install, and they take a greater understanding to effectively locate them.  These lights can be located from 15’ up to 100’ into a tree, depending on how they are utilized and the light source used.  NiteLiters, Inc. is one of the few lighting companies performing this work with the use of certified tree climbers.  This allows every possible opportunity from a tree.

Lenses or filters can be added to these light fixtures.  These elements can provide various shades of color to the light source, or they can control the output of light to a particular shape.  Again, the lighting designer is a valuable asset in this decision making process.

Moonlighting is a term frequently used to describe the application of down light spilling through the tree’s canopy to cast shadow patterns upon the surfaces below.  It’s an intriguing display, this shadow and light, which provides interest to an area or scene.  Additionally, down lighting can act as a transitional source of lower or intermediate levels of light.

Down lighting should be an integral part of any professional lighting company’s design intent.  It can be that added touch which makes for a perfect scene, and it should be considered where it is possible.

CONCERNS

There are a few concerns that anyone wishing to utilize this type of lighting, as listed in the following:

  • Protection of the tree—there are proper methods and practices that should be utilized when securing cables and any hardware to the tree.  Any practice which directly secures a fixture without any offset clearance from the living exterior of the trunk or branch is a bad practice.
  • Glare—proper positioning of light fixtures is critical in order to avoid or to minimize glare problems, especially when located at unsafe pedestrian crossings, such as stairs.
  • Tree climb 4Safety—this should always be a first consideration, whether it is during the installation of these fixtures or if it’s for the future consideration of those passing underneath these locations.  Ladders are dangerous and tree climbers take a greater risk than normal.  Glare is a problematic and/or hazardous condition.
  • Routine Maintenance—of all of the service work necessary for a lighting system, tree lights are the most demanding and they require routine maintenance inspection.  This is due to several things:  1) the tree is living and growing continuously, 2) rodents and pests can occasionally be problematic to these fixtures, and 3) weather can impact these locations and it can be harder to access.

The point here is that there are extended issues with this form of lighting.  These things are acceptable and well worth the time because of the wonderful effects you can achieve in this form of lighting.  These concerns are only presented for understanding and they must be understood by the company designing, installing and maintaining these lighting systems.

Significance of Design

architect planSomething interesting came to mind after our last article appeared on the NiteLiters, Inc. website.  It had to do with the importance of design.  This is the ever crucial part of all specialized trade services.  In this last topic discussion about “Community,” we explained that it is a place where people can both rejoice and mourn things together.  Community and being involved in a community is about sharing experiences or moments together.

Why then is design so significant, as it relates to one’s community?  Could it not be said that design impacts us in either a positive or negative way?  We believe that it does, and for this reason we have chosen to discuss it further—showing its significance.

The decisions a designer makes will leave a lasting impression upon many–the end user or owner of that property, the surrounding neighborhood, and even the whole community.  If you think about this for a moment, this might make more sense.  Let’s imagine you have a bad experience through a poor design decision.  How would you feel about this?  In most cases, you would be unhappy.  And, because you were unhappy, this gets expressed to others—friends, family and associations.  Hence, the word is spread into the community.

garden stairs3Unfortunately, the bad experience in outdoor lighting happens more than you would think.  Why?….it’s because of several faults:

  • A lack of education—by both the consumer and the trade profession.
  • A lack of skills or professional craftsmanship—by the tradesperson performing the work.
  • A lack of standards, practices and expectations—by the industry.

These above faults are serious and they continue to put a sore eye on the practice of low voltage outdoor lighting.  If we focus primarily on the educational aspect of this topic, then we will find that there is little concern for this awareness—we haven’t reached a point of total disappointment by those experiencing these frustrations.

THE PROCESS

design input chartAt NiteLiters, Inc., we believe that education and experience are critically important throughout each step of our process.  You will note that I said, “Process.”  Design is a process—an important part of creating the best opportunity and condition for our customers.  It should be noted that we use this word, “Design” as more than a word.  We’ve stated it’s a process—one which takes years to develop.

What is involved in this Design Process?  It takes one to be disciplined enough to:

  1. Ask the right questions and to effectively listen.  A customer should be able to tell you what their desires, frustrations and concerns are.
  2. Evaluate each setting and aspect of the work space.  This should include understanding what items are important to capture on the site–these usually include those things of special meaning to the customer.
  3. Understand the construction process.  A designer needs to fully understand how these projects are implemented if they are to ensure success for the installation team and the customer.
  4. Understand the various applications of light, as it applies to the light source.  There is a grand spectrum of LED’s and lamps available, and it is overwhelming.  NiteLiters, Inc. has simplified this process to ensure both quality and longevity of the system installed.
  5. Understand all job site limitations that might impact the design intent.
  6. Effectively visualize what the work space will look like during the daylight hours.
  7. Understanding the best products available for the job.

These skills take years to acquire and to develop.  This fact alone is the biggest benefit one gains by working with NiteLiters, Inc.  And, it is this reason at why we are not the lowest priced option available to the market–developed experience provides great value.

THE PROBLEM WE ALL FACE

sharing hands as oneIt is very important to understand the reality of the problems we face, as they affect the outcome to all works.  NiteLiters, Inc. believes in this design process, and in the knowledge we have accrued over almost two decades.  It is not only in our best interest, but in the best interest of the community to provide the best services and information about this specialty craft.  This is the benefit we provide to you.

There are some key elements that lead to a ‘poor’ decision in this process:

  • Impulse buying on low cost products thinking this will save you money
  • Lack of understanding of what makes a good product
  • Not placing value on experience—this includes the ‘design’ process
  • Assuming anyone can perform these skills

Each of these above listed problems is a killer towards achieving a successful end result on your outdoor lighting project.  There are two ways to avoid these conditions:

  1. Research each contractor/designer and understand their background—find their website, check the contractor’s license board, and inspect their credentials. Those that don’t question these things will end up getting into trouble.
  2. Use known referrals from friends and family—this is your best way to know how these people actually work.

There really is no other source at this point in time.  Our industry is behind and has no standard form or process in place for this type of work.  It’s important to feel comfortable and led by those with real-world experience in these applications.  And, this is why we specialize only in this realm.

Fence Lighting

Fence decorative frontlit1Most people would question, “Why illuminate the fence—what’s so special about that?”  In some cases they are right, especially if the fencing is not attractive or if it is in poor condition.  However, a fence can be effectively utilized as part of the landscape scene.

Let’s dissect what a fence actual is and for what purpose it serves.  In most cases it defines the boundaries to one’s property.  But, it can act as a screen to hide unsightly areas or it can provide containment.  Fences are usually man-made and structural by nature.  Most are made of wood, metal or stone, but some are made with plants, as in hedges.  These natural fences can provide the same function.

There are several benefits to fencing:

  • Security of the property or space
  • Control of pedestrian, animal and vehicular movement
  • Privacy
  • Beautification of the space—utilizing a vertical layer within the scene

Fence decorative backlit2 shadowsDid you know that fencing can enhance a lighting scheme?  Just look through some of the finer publications that highlight various landscapes at night and you will see some of this.  Fences allow for a beautiful backdrop to add color or better impact garden art.  They can allow lighting fixtures to be used from varying heights.  They can act as a reflective surface for indirect lighting, which cuts out any glare problems.  Shadow patterns can be achieved when casting light through some types of fencing, which adds interest to a space.

These types of vertical elements can allow for many creative options in the lighting scheme.  At NiteLiters, Inc., we believe that your yard should be a personal journey.  Fencing allows our design team an opportunity to provide you more than what normally would be expected.

Thoughtful Tips

Fence gate downlit1Typically, fence lighting should be somewhat subdued and not used as a primary focal point.  What this means is that the lighting application should act as a ‘transitional’ source—a comfortable, pass-through level of lighting.  One should feel a sense of comfort and peace.

“Fence lighting adds a new level of interest to most any setting, as it provides a vertical dimension to the setting.”

Tip #1:  When illuminating a fence, don’t get too close to its surface as this will create “hot spots” that are distracting and unpleasant.

Tip #2:  Avoid direct glare from any light sources along these features, as it is again, distracting to the eye.  The goals are to create comfort, warmth and interest.

Tip #3:  When using the fence to create shadows, ensure that these shadows don’t create a safety hazard.  The especially applies to areas of elevation change—stairs and slopes.  The last thing you want is someone to mis-step and fall.

Service is Paramount!

Service pic1How often do you hear the word ‘Service’ used by most every company?  It’s a common and expected term that describes a function.  Should not it be an active priority or a measure for legitimacy?

At NiteLiters, Inc., we believe so.

As quoted by Chris Mitchell, lighting designer/sales manager of NiteLiters, Inc.:

“Service is paramount!  We would not be here today if it wasn’t for our commitment to this key aspect of business.  I can honestly say that each of our employees genuinely cares about what and how they provide for our customer.  This is a trait that we look for in our team members.  One must have a ‘servant’s heart’ in order to be a part of this company.”

Service is a way of life and it is part of our culture.  Our service is to provide for our customer’s needs and to do it with a servant’s heart.

NiteLiters company picService employs understanding, knowledge and a sense of urgency in order to be successful.  What is meant by understanding?  It is the understanding of the customer, his or her needs, and of the lighting systems employed.  Knowledge is the educational side of this craft.  Each of the NiteLiters, Inc. employees has spent many years learning the proper way to design, install and service the equipment used on these projects.  We continually spend time sharpening all of our skills.  And, a sense of urgency means that when our customer has a problem….we have a problem, and it needs to be fixed now.  This is how we provide exceptional quality and service.

Service quote2The only way to guarantee the lighting design’s intent from the very beginning is to provide a level of service that goes above and beyond.  Only those who care will achieve this.  Hence, we default back to those have a ‘servant’s heart’.

A service provider’s role is not an easy one.  Great attention must be given to the project and to the customer.  Changes are inevitable and no lighting system will remain in tip-top shape without continual supervision.  Remember, plants grow and landscapes change with time.  Statues, garden art, water features, decks, paths and the like are added, removed, or relocated.  Service technicians must be able to adapt to provide the best performance measures.

“Helping a person will not necessarily change the world, but it will change the world for that person.”

NiteLiters, Inc. believes in the concept of making each customer, a customer for life—you become a NiteLiters, Inc. family member.  Our past or current customer is just as important as any new customer—it’s all one-in-the-same.  We cannot successfully grow without new customers, and we cannot gain recommendations or referrals without a happy customer base.

Service quote1Service truly is a NiteLiters, Inc. competitive selling advantage and we are humbled by our success.  We could say we are proud of this accomplishment, but we recognize our intent is offered to a higher source.

Path Lighting

garden path1What is a garden?  Simply put, a garden is a planned space usually outdoors that is set aside for display, cultivation or enjoyment.  It serves to inspire those who visit it.  But, how do we get there?  How does one move through these spaces?  It’s all in the form of a path or walk.

Here are a few poetic quotes that present inspiration:

“I walk through the garden,

On this warm summer’s day,

To smell the flowers,

That grandma raised.”

            Lois E. Felder

“This is the garden: colours come and go

Frail azures fluttering from night’s outer wing

Strong silent greens serenely lingering

Absolute lights like baths of golden snow.”

E. Cummings

“Beauty surrounds us, but usually we need to be walking in a garden to know it.”

            Rumi

And the following quote reveals how a walk through the garden is much like a story in a book:

“A garden path can become the thread of a plot, connecting moments and incidents into a narrative.  The narrative structure might be a simple chain of events with a beginning, middle, and end.”

            Rebecca Solnit

path entry2In essence, the garden path and/or walk should lead the visitor on a personalized journey of your home.  And at night, this journey should be comfortably lit.  There are several ways to illuminate these spaces, but NiteLiters, Inc. utilizes light applications that best impact the setting.

Key Points in Path Lighting

path entry1Path lighting will typically conform to the mid and lower levels of illumination, so as to not compete with focal points or interest areas.  This transitional form of lighting should be evenly lit to ensure a safe means to traverse by.

NiteLiters, Inc. will utilize several means of applying light to these areas, whether directly lighting the pathways or indirectly illuminating other landscape elements which will reflect this light.  The lighting designer will determine how this application will provide the best interest or lighting effect in each scenario.

The following bullet points are goals to consider:

  • An even and comfortable level of illumination should be provided along primary pedestrian routes
  • Safety is the main objective
  • Increased levels of illumination should be provided at stairs and areas of elevation changes

“Path Lighting should guide the visitor to a destination point”

Details & Tips

There are several ways to effectively light a path way:

  1. path stairs1Use of path light fixtures equally spaced along a pedestrian route–it is preferable to stagger these lights in an alternating pattern.
  2. Use of down lights mounted up in trees that specifically aim onto these areas.
  3. Use of reflected lighting off of surfaces, walls or fences onto these paths.

“Path lighting should not stand out or capture too much of one’s attention”

Tip #1:  When using path lights, a staggered placement pattern has a more comfortable feel verses an aligned (same side of the path) approach.  There will be times that an aligned layout is the only means, and that is okay.

Note:  Placement of path lights in lawn and turf areas is a poor practice and should be avoided at all cost.  These are considered a big maintenance problem, due to mowers and trimming/edging can create likely damages to these fixtures.

Tip #2:  When utilizing down lights from overhead positions, whether from trees or structures, they should be aimed within a 30-degree maximum off of the vertical axis.  This limit will ensure the least amount of glare into any passer’s eyes.

Note:  It’s always better to illuminate from a position perpendicular to the walk (from the side), as this will avoid directional glare into one’s face.

Tip #3:  Reflected light is a great source for gentle illumination and is perfect for transitional areas.

The Home Entry

Have you ever thought about what you do when you first arrive at someone’s home?  It’s doubtful that many do.  But, if we take a moment to consider this, then it seems logical that everyone would say it is to look for the front door.

confusing entryMany times a home is laid out in such as way that it makes the entry approach questionable to find.  If we use lighting design as a reference, then our first goal is to ensure that pedestrian traffic flow is directed to this final destination point.  The front door needs to be a primary focal point, if this is where you want your guests to go.

NiteLiters, Inc. believes that this route should not only be safe and inviting, but should be easily understood, too.  This will be our focus topic in this article.

Key Points to Lighting the Door and Entry

There are two key points for illuminating the front door and this entry/exit point:  1) to provide a higher level of illumination versus any surrounding light, and 2) to ensure ones safety when moving into and through this area.

harsh glareLight glare will be the biggest challenge within this lighting zone.  In addition, this area can become a safety hazard if improperly lit.  This includes changes in elevation, such as steps and stairs.  Every home will have at least one step-up into its interior.  Any ‘good’ lighting design will provide the proper lighting to avoid these concerns.

Outdoor lighting is an effective tool in directing movement.  Invited guests should never be confused as to where to go during their visit.  Confusion equates to “discomfort” and this in turn makes the visit less than positive.  Proper illumination will avoid these issues.

The following bullet points are listed for proper landscape lighting of these areas:

  • A strongly lit front door or destination point (this is the focal point)
  • No harsh glare concerns with the placement of any light fixtures
  • Gentle illumination throughout this zone
  • No danger spots or unlit steps

“Confusion equates to discomfort.  Proper lighting will enhance one’s comfort level and experience when visiting a property.”

Testimonial Story

We receive quite a few personalized letters from our customers, each expressing something about our lighting systems and how their lives have changed for the better.  The following shares one, as it relates to their enhanced home entry:

“…We never realized how difficult it was for our guests to find our front door until one of our friends said something to us.  John and I began to question this and they were right.

As I am sure you can remember, our front door is off to the far side of the property, due to the unique floor plan we have.  We have two gates that lead into the back and side yard, so naturally everyone goes to the back yard gate thinking this is where to enter the house.

After your company finished its work in the front, your lighting made a world of difference.  We no longer have to worry about people wandering around through the back yard.

Your work is amazing and we thank you.”

 Details & Tips

In order to create a comfortable space, there needs to be a gentle lower level of light throughout the area.  This is a common problem seen with many lighting designs—not enough light used to provide for this.  Please understand this is not a sales tactic to sell more lights, because it’s a truthful fact.

At night, the eye is most attracted to the strongest contrast (darkness & brightness).  If the space has limited lighting, then the eye sees mostly darkness with a few sporadic “hot” or bright spots—it’s distracting and uncomfortable.  The only way to avoid this is by providing more light sources that are soft, to provide a smooth, transitional flow of illumination along this route.  This is much easier on the eye and it provides for a calm feeling.

“NiteLiters, Inc. utilizes various lighting applications to provide for effective transitional pedestrian flow”

door lit overheadTip #1:  Apply direct lighting on to the front door, but with the least amount of glare into the eyes of those passing through this opening.  This directive applies to those entering and exiting the home.

There are two ways to achieve this:  1) directly overhead of the door and slightly in front of its surface, and within the limits of <30-degrees off of the vertical axis, or 2) off to one or both sides of the door, aiming across the surface and using this same 30-degree limitation.

Note:  Overhead or down lighting is likely the best way to illuminate these pedestrian routes in order to avoid blinding glare issues.  Light fixtures aiming upwards from the ground level will definitely cause a glare problem and this occurs when exiting the home.  If this is your only option, then do so from the sides of the door and on more extreme angles to avoid contact with the eyes.

wantaentrygatewebTip #2:  Apply indirect lighting throughout this entry approach, so that it provides a smooth transition into this destination.  The goal is to provide comfort and to make it inviting.

Tip #3:  Ensure that the front door is a safe pass-through.  Provide for even illumination so that there are no ‘danger’ spots.  This includes uneven steps and/or access paths.  Safety is a priority.

Courtyard Lighting

This is a wonderful topic for discussion because courtyard lighting is not limited to the type of space you are in.  Most people understand this setting to be more of an isolated area or a transitional space that people traverse through.

A courtyard is typically defined as an un-roofed, outdoor space that is partially or completely surrounded by walls or buildings.  It has a feeling of being both enclosed and open at the same time.

Many times one will find these spaces designed into the entry of a home, which allows additional value and comfort to the entry approach.  The purpose of this article is to explore how one might consider lighting these spaces to enhance this experience.

Key Points to Illuminating a Courtyard

Let’s first address the ‘purpose’ of this space.  Courtyards can be a pass-through or transitional space or it can be a special gathering place.  They are designed to provide two things:  1) interest or beauty, and 2) comfort.

courtyard wall 1This purpose is important because it sets the tone for your guests as they experience your home life.  Interest and beauty provide for a joyful experience.  Comfort provides relaxation and a sense of calm, which can be another form of joy.  Who doesn’t wish to feel this way when visiting someone?

How can you ensure that these spaces are both effective and functional?  One must consider the following points:

  • Safety–to provide proper levels of illumination
  • Interest–to capture attention
  • Warmth–to provide coziness and to make it inviting
  • Mood–to set the tone that affects one’s emotions

Note:  It is this last point that makes the greatest impact on your guest–it will provide them with a memorable experience.  You must ask yourself, “What is it that I want to convey to my guest(s)?”  This is where your personality can shine through.

“The goal of the courtyard is to provide a memorable experience.”

courtyard 1The courtyard must stimulate the senses, as this is the key to making the experience memorable.  “Sight”—visually appealing and effectively illuminated, “Sound”—calming sounds like water, birds, or wind chimes, “Smell”—refreshing floral scents or ones that relax are best, and even “Touch”—soft, clean and non-threatening.  Each of these elements combined can intensify this experience.

Lastly, the courtyard is a highly specialized space.  It requires a great deal of understanding of each of these elements.  NiteLiters, Inc. has the experience and skill set to provide for these unique settings–we are confident in finding the best solution for you.

Testimonial Story

We receive quite a few personalized letters from many of our customers.  Each one has expressed something about our lighting systems and how their lives have changed for the better.  The following note shares one of these moments:

“Dear Gary and the NiteLiters team,

I am so amazed at how beautiful you have lit up our front entry courtyard.  We have always loved this part of our home, but it wasn’t until you had brought it all alive at night that we received several compliments.

My best friend from high school recently came to visit.  Her husband and she both commented that the time we shared together sitting in this garden was so wonderful—they will never forget it.  They commented on how the water spilling from our fountain cast a mesmerizing shadow play or dancing pattern against the back wall.  And, to see the soft, warm lights glowing through the bushes made them feel so relaxed.

We cannot thank you enough for what you have done for us.

Sincerely,”

Details & Tips

Unfortunately, courtyards and homes vary greatly and most are individualized by the homeowner.  Many take on a personality of their own and here in lies the design challenge.  Our best advice is to ensure that you have hired someone with true experience designing such settings.

Proven experience and this kind of understanding gives NiteLiters, Inc. the competitive edge over our competition.  Our promise to YOU–to provide the finest, most effective, mood-enhancing solution possible.

“NiteLiters, Inc. understands the importance of utilizing light that will be remembered.”

Tip #1:  Provide a gentle flow of illumination throughout the space.  Avoid a strong, single application of light surrounded by darkness—this is way too much contrast and it will not look pleasing.

Note:  Remember, the goal to these areas is to make them “inviting” and warm.  Effectively, lighting can do this because of its nature and color.  It is best to apply warmer color temperatures of light typically around 2700 Kelvin, but it can range from very warm (2200) to a warmer white (3000) on this temperature scale.

Loduca courtyard table compTip #2:  Apply indirect lighting as much as possible and avoid glare.  Using walls or surfaces to reflect light is a very pleasing approach to illuminating these types of spaces.

Tip #3:  Provide for only one focal point in this space—this will require the brightness level of lighting, as compared to any other lighting application.  By doing so, you will provide both simplicity to the scene and sense of calm.  Additionally, it will limit competition in the space, too.

Loduca rose shadows comprTip #4:  Create interest by utilizing shadows and light play.  Walls are an excellent backdrop for this illumination.  These patterns or play of light can create movement whether it’s from the wind or water, and it can provide added value–stimulating the senses.

BBQ Lighting

Who doesn’t love the smell and flavors provided by a BBQ?  This is the time of the year when more and more people spend a beautiful afternoon or evening outside.  These are the times when family and friends relax to the kind of meal that everyone remembers.

Many view BBQing as a family tradition…it’s a positive experience or at least, it should be.  One can vividly recall the memory of smell and taste.  Maybe it was the tantalizing smell of hickory or mesquite lingering from the smoked ribs.  Or, maybe it’s that funny or scary moment when dad had a roaring fire that was burning the chicken!  Either way, these moments make for wonderful family memories.

caveman-cooking-lizard

Regardless, there is something about the BBQ that lures people to gather around it.  For men, it’s the element of “fire” and how it’s something instinctual…..making them ‘hunter-providers’.  It must be that “caveman” experience.

And for women, it’s all about the warmth of food and being with family.  The BBQ seems to promote love in many ways.  So, with that said, let’s get to cooking!

Testimonial Story

It was several years ago when one of our customers had contacted us specifically about what we could do to help her with some of the problems they were having, as it was associated with their BBQing area.  NiteLiters, Inc. was enthusiastic to find a creative solution with this opportunity.  Here is the story:

“Gary, I wanted to take a moment to pass along how grateful we are about the work that NiteLiters did for me.  My husband (John) was thrilled.  We used it shortly after it was installed.

As you may recall, John was having such difficulty seeing what he was cooking.  We mostly use the BBQ after dark and this was very frustrating to him.  Since your team had installed the lighting at our patio and specifically on the BBQ it has made a world of difference.  No longer do I see the stress on his face as he cooks—this is such a wonderful gift—thank you!!

John’s confidence in cooking is back!  He used to either under-cook or over-cook the meats without consistency, which was very upsetting to him. It’s amazing that having the proper lighting can make such a difference.  If not for you taking the time to explain why and where to put lights, we would still be dealing with these frustrations.  If you recall, we used to use the back porch light to try to light up the grill.  You showed us how the BBQ lid would block the light causing shadows to be cast where we were cooking—it was terrible.

We are thrilled with the work you did.  Thank you so much.”

John & Mary Lou, Owensboro, KY

Key Points in BBQ Lighting

In order to master the BBQ one must ensure the following:  1) Temperature control, 2) Cook time, 3) Food preparation, 4) Equipment & tools, and 5) Proper lighting.  Our focus in this article will be on the lighting component.

???????????????????????????????????????BBQing is a “task-oriented” activity and it needs direct and properly aimed light.  If the cook cannot effectively see what is being prepared/cooked, then this is a problem.  Typically, this activity occurs towards the evening hours (for dinner), and many times it’s in the dark.  If this is the case, then why hinder yourself with inadequate lighting?  It serves no good to waste time, energy and money in performing this task, if you cannot have a good chance to be successful.  Therefore, your goals are:

  • To work efficiently (proper tools & equipment & lighting)
  • To gain a return on your investment (food & time)
  • ease of use in this task (comfort)

The bottom line is this, and it applies to this setting:

“Keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll keep getting what you’re getting!”

NiteLiters, Inc. is confident about our ability to solve problems and in finding solutions.  In this case, it’s finding how best to apply light to the task at hand—the BBQ station.  There are four (4) ways to effectively illuminate the grilling area or BBQ station:

  1. A fixed, overhead light fixture
  2. A fixed, internal, built-in light source within the BBQ lid/cover
  3. A fixed, surface-mount/counter top, flexible arm light fixture
  4. A non-fixed, moveable, clip-on style light fixture

Details & Tips

Let’s take a moment to look at the above testimonial.  It’s an example of a common problem, as it applies to inadequate lighting.  A fact commonly unknown is that most BBQ stations have ineffective and poor lighting.  Most home builders and electricians only plan for a single light source outside of the back door of the home—that’s usually all that the building code requires.  So, unless you are building a custom home and specifically plan for this type of task lighting, then you are out of luck.  You’re only left with a glary light source on the back wall—that’s it!

“NiteLiters, Inc. has the expertise and professional experience to properly locate light fixtures to address task-oriented activities.”

Tip #1:  The best way to apply light to the BBQ station is from above and to the side of the cook/operator.

Note:  One must always remember the many grills/BBQ’s have attached lids that open 90 degrees off of the horizontal plane, which means this will most likely block any light source to this backside of the grill.  The cook will always be in a “shadowed” condition in this scenario.

Tip #2:  A directed light source positioned further from the BBQ unit will provide a better spread of light for the majority of the cooking station.  This is the benefit of utilizing a light fixture mounted up in a patio overhead structure or a tree.  Most of the surface mount or lid mounted lighting units only apply enough light to a small limited area and the rest of the cooking or preparation areas are left in the dark.
